Eric Barnes will be our speaker for the September 14th meeting. The title of his presentation is: Historyman Comics:
He is an American historiographer, author, podcaster, and creator of Historyman Comics, an innovative educational series bringing the people and events of the American Revolution to life for a new generation.
A graduate of Gardner-Webb University and retired Detective Sergeant, Barnes has also served as a newspaper columnist in North and South Carolina. His Historyman projects include a blog, a Revolutionary War podcast heard in all 50 states and more than 40 countries, and a growing series of historically researched graphic novels focusing particularly on the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution.
Historyman Comics uses engaging storytelling and illustration to introduce young readers to such figures as Thomas Sumter, Francis Marion, and Andrew Pickens and to the battles and events that shaped Revolutionary South Carolina. The comics are supported by maps, timelines, historical resources, and educational materials and have been featured by South Carolina’s 250th Anniversary Commission.
Barnes recently appeared in the South Carolina State Library’s Speaker at the Center series discussing his Francis Marion graphic novel, An Army of a Different Kind.
At our September 14 meeting, Eric will share the story behind Historyman Comics and his efforts to use a modern medium to introduce today’s generation to the heroes and history of the American Revolution.
